20 blank notecards (5 each of 4 designs) with envelopes in a decorative box and printed on recycled paper. Carl Larsson quickly made up for a loveless and impoverished childhood when, in a succession of events that must have seemed dreamlike, he met a splendid young woman, she loved him back, they married, and the bride’s father gave the new couple a little house. Eight children later, the (expanded) cottage was bursting with affection, and Larsson (Swedish, 1853–1919) documented the sources of his domestic bliss in light, bright, extraordinarily cheerful, and very beautiful watercolors. Everyday life at the Larssons’ appears to have involved eating outdoors at every opportunity: three of the paintings reproduced in this notecard set depict that activity. One, Crayfishing, shows a finely laid table at creek’s edge, a platter heaped with crustaceans, and a flock of children bringing in still more freshly netted mud bugs. It’s a vision to make one both hungry and happy.
